“(..)Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country, it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.”

more than functions

The book is about elements of organisational beauty. Its aim is to show the various aspects of an organisation that make it more than a collection of functions. Although important, it seldom are the pure utilitarian goals that form the beauty of an organisation. There is more to experiencing the beauty of an organisation than functional charts or spreadsheets with the performance indicators. This book discusses 50 elements that make an organisation something that moves people and make them more then willing to be part of it as a customer, an employee or a business partner. Elements that guide the design and shaping of an organisation. Elements that will come from other realms than the common business practice.

(…)

The ground to cover while thinking about organisational beauty is large and at the same time scarcely mapped. That limits any realistic ambition about the use and inspiration the book can provide and asks for a fair share of modesty. Having said that, the goal is to start the journey through this terra incognita and share my impressions, insights and ideas with you, the reader.
