art as power update #22

layered delination

twenty drawings

layered brush strokes that all depict a kind of line

somewhere in the middle

a line that is not drawn as a line

but which is the result of two brush strokes

is it a line that delineates, that separates?

does it constitute a border?

to indicate:

what is ‘us’

or

where starts ‘they’

the line is vague,

an accidental occurrence as a result of brush strokes and ink

a line as a connection between two areas

which are essentially one

through the layers that constitute the whole, the entity

the drawings are made into a 3 minute video

(see at the top of this page)

the video reinforces the blurriness

the arbitrariness of the boundaries

the dissolving layers of a temporal reality become visible

the drawings and the video refer to the realities of organisational design

and its illusions

in the design of organisations the demarcation

is often more appreciated than vagueness

sharp boundaries are set by defining

roles

responsibilities

agencies

departments

tribes

branches

units

teams

specialisations

the drawings and the video can be seen as

a kind of visual vocabulary

to capture and recognise the subtle differences

in a layered organisational reality

as opposed to the wordy vocabulary of strict delineation
